Through the Water

A cleanser, a veil, and a means of revelation…

Through the Water draws from personal family archives to construct surreal, devotional imagery through alternative photographic processes. The work reexamines photographs of baptisms, church gatherings, and intimate family moments rooted in a religious upbringing. These images once documents of faith, community, and belonging are re-imagined through a process of transformation in which water becomes both material and metaphor: a cleanser, a veil, and a means of revelation.

The Images are Submerged, Transferred, and Reformed…

Working with cyanotypes and emulsion lifts, the images are submerged, transferred, and reformed through cycles of ritual and repetition. The act of making mirrors the ceremonial gestures embedded within the source material: immersion, purification, renewal. Through this process, photographs begin to shift and dissolve: faces blur, bodies fragment, and the clarity of the original archive gives way to ambiguity. What remains are traces of presence, echoes of memory suspended between recognition and anonymity.

Between Devotion and Doubt, Preservation and Erasure…

Through the Water reflects on the ways faith and family histories are inherited, remembered, and reinterpreted over time. By transforming archival imagery through water-based processes, the work considers how memory itself behaves, fluid, fragile, and continually reshaped. In this space between devotion and doubt, preservation and erasure, the project meditates on the enduring imprint of belief, identity, and lineage.

Water acts as both purifier and veil, revealing memory as something fluid, fragile, and continually reshaped...
